Defense Pacts: A Danger to Regional Peace

In the milieu of a stand-off in a security ridden region, a single development is enough to destabilize the balance of power that remain no less than a stroke to peace in any region of the world. A few days ago, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has inked many defense pacts with New Delhi, which are directly aimed at boosting India's defense capability. This defense-related deal has many aspects to be assessed:

Let the healthy strategic life grow

First, the aforementioned pact is sought to counter Chinese influence in the region. That is why a couple of acerbic statements seem to flame from both US and Chinese sides. The former chanted its rival as predator whereas the latter termed its rival as fostering “Cold War mentality”.

Second, this deal would boost Indian defense capability. Accordingly, the prevailing balance of power will lean towards Indian favor that would undermine further the already lingering peace scenario. Third, Pakistan's defense stakes will remain in jeopardy. Pakistan has maintained a well-capacitated policy to maintain relations with both China and the USA.

USA's recent quest to bolster Indian security bastion would give rise to concerns in Pakistan's decision-making avenues. Accordingly, the foremost impacts of the said above pacts are bi-fold; a blow to peace, and an aggravated mistrust on the Pakistani side. The opposite pathways will be pursued if this pact signing takes a materialized practical form.

No one can deny ideal life

That is why well-ordained rationality is explicitly required for the sake of peace and stability in the South Asian region. Importantly, the signed pacts and deals lead to support from the perspective that the realistic policies of the great powers during the peace times lead towards jingoism which is dangerous for global peace.

To wind up, this jingoistic approach must be stopped. And the signed above pacts between India and the USA would serve the realistic jingoism that would jeopardize the regional peace.
