The United State of America has imposed sanctions against Turkey on Wednesday. These sanctions are in the wake of Turkish decisions to buy S-400 a Russian-made air defense system. According to the White House, the Turkish purchase of the S-400 air defense system does not suit the security interest of the NATO alliance.
Thus, it is mandatory to influence Turkish decisions. Anyhow, these sanctions will play a negative role at the global level and will generate negative impacts on the preservation of global peace. These impacts can be taken into consideration as follows:
First, The NATO alliance will lose a strong ally who maintains the second-largest defense force in it with the US forces being the largest one. So, this will weaken NATO. Second, the said sanctions will have also diverse impacts regarding the balance of power at the international level. The bloc led by Russia and China will foster an upper psychological impact.
Third, Importantly, Turkey will join the bloc led by China, Russia, and the like-minded powers (SeeWill China become a major arms supplier to Iran?). Hence, this association will strengthen Moscow-Beijing power and will lower the Nato’s upper hand in the scenario of a global conflict.
At the regional level, Turkey and Israel will be part of opposing blocs. This will undermine a stable situation in the region. Thus, the decision of imposing sanctions against Turkey will generate negative impacts regarding international stability.
